5 Easy and Enchanting Ways to Embrace Winter Nature Study

It may be tempting to sit in a cozy chair with a mug of hot cocoa during the cold winter months but there is still plenty of nature to explore. Put on your boots and scarf and head outside with the kids for winter nature study. There is so much beauty to see and lovely winter sounds to enjoy.

We have 5 simple ways to love winter nature study this season, including our exclusive winter nature study journal and a companion book list!

1. Silent Walks:

Winter walks are best enjoyed when you quietly walk along and listen to the sounds of the season. Challenge your child to walk silently through the park or around the block and actively listen to his surroundings. Have him write down everything he heard on the walk.

2. Track the Weather:

When we think of winter, we think snow. However, winter weather has a variety of weather to experience. Keep track of temperature, clouds, and have your child describe what they see and feel.

3. Study Snowflakes and Icicles:

When it is snowing take a black cloth and allow the snowflakes to fall on it. Have your child look closely to see the intricate pattern. Your child can draw what he sees or take pictures of the snowflakes and icicles and study the patterns and form.

4. Study the Difference in the Season:

Each season brings something new and leaves behind something else. Ask your child to write the differences between what he sees, hears, and feels this season from the last season. Extend this to how he predicts what next season will bring and what will leave.

5. Winter Bird Watching:

Your child may be surprised to learn that some birds stay around during the winter season. If you have a bird feeder you can encourage many to stay by keeping the feeder full. Don’t forget to bring a sketch book or camera to take pictures so you can identify the birds later. Here are more ideas for making bird study fun.
