Hands-On STEM Learning at Home with MEL Science
One of the greatest gifts of homeschooling is the freedom to explore subjects in meaningful and hands-on ways. For my boys, science has always been one of those subjects where books alone aren’t enough, we need experiments, projects, and real-world applications to make it click. That’s why I love using MEL Science in our homeschool.
MEL Science offers subscription-based science kits that bring STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) to life right at the kitchen table. Instead of memorizing formulas or just reading about concepts, kids get to build, experiment, and truly experience science.

Why STEM Learning Is Essential
We’ve all heard the buzz about STEM education, but it’s more than just a trend. The world our children are growing up in is rapidly changing, and many of the careers they’ll encounter as adults will be shaped by science, technology, and innovation.
By introducing STEM early, we’re giving our kids a foundation in critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity. These aren’t just “school skills”—they’re life skills. Whether they pursue careers in medicine, engineering, renewable energy, computer science, or even creative industries like design and architecture, STEM gives them the tools to adapt and thrive.
The Power of Hands-On Learning
As homeschoolers, we get to go beyond textbooks. We can give our kids opportunities to tinker, test, and discover. That’s where MEL Science really shines. Each kit is designed for kids to explore a concept through building or experimenting. They don’t just read about how something works; they build it, test it, and see it in action.
When my boys worked on the Projectile Cannon Kit, for example, they weren’t just following instructions. They were learning about force, angles, and mechanics while experimenting with different outcomes. The excitement on their faces when the cannon launched was the kind of learning moment that sticks with kids long-term.
And the best part? The kits are engaging enough that they want to keep testing and improving, which naturally builds persistence and problem-solving.
What MEL Science Offers
MEL Science is more than just a one-off project. They offer a wide range of kits that cover different STEM topics, including:
Physics kits – like the cannon, catapults, or gyroscopes, introducing real mechanical concepts.
Chemistry kits – safe, fun experiments that let kids explore reactions and lab techniques.
STEM engineering kits – projects that encourage kids to design, build, and think like engineers.
VR and digital lessons – interactive, tech-based ways to deepen understanding of concepts.
This variety allows homeschool families to weave STEM into learning in a way that fits any age level or interest.
How STEM Kits Prepare Kids for the Future
One thing I love about incorporating MEL Science into our homeschool is how naturally it connects to future opportunities. Even if my boys don’t become scientists or engineers, they’re gaining skills that prepare them for real life—skills like:
Breaking down complex problems
Testing solutions and learning from mistakes
Thinking creatively when something doesn’t work
Collaborating and sharing ideas
These are exactly the qualities employers look for, no matter the industry.
Our Experience with MEL Science
In our homeschool, STEM can sometimes feel intimidating, but MEL Science has made it accessible and fun. The kits are thoughtfully designed with clear instructions, high-quality materials, and experiments that actually work.
The Projectile Cannon Kit was a hit with my boys, but what stood out to me was how it turned a lesson on force and motion into a day of laughter, experimentation, and teamwork. It was the perfect reminder that kids learn best when they’re engaged and enjoying the process. We enjoyed adding STEM learning into our fun Friday homeschool routine!
New Kits We’ve Tried: Science of Light and Electric Motor
We recently added two new MEL Science kits to our lineup, Science of Light and Electric Motor, and they fit right in with how much my boys enjoyed the Projectile Cannon Kit. One thing I appreciate is that each kit lists the subject and time estimate right on the box, so I know exactly what we are getting into before we ever open it.
My older one gravitated toward the Electric Motor kit and wanted more of a challenge. It walks through building an electromagnet, then an electric motor, and finally an electric generator, wiring components together and testing the circuit at each stage. It was a good stretch for him, more involved than some of our past kits, and he liked having to troubleshoot when something did not work the first time.
Science of Light was the one my younger son kept coming back to. The instructions are told through a comic featuring a dinosaur character, which kept him engaged while he built his own polarizing viewer piece by piece. He liked flipping ahead to see what came next almost as much as building the project itself.
What I keep coming back to with MEL Science is that there is a kit for wherever your kids are. My two are a year apart but on different levels when it comes to science, which makes it easy to hand two different kits to two different kids and have them both actually finish what they started. We are happy homeschoolers!
